Alkaline-food Diets

Every bite of food you eat produces byproducts that affect the pH level of the body's fluids. Alkaline food diets are based on the premise that the diet should maintain a slightly alkaline pH level between 7 and 8 where fluids' pH normally falls.

Alkaline diet proponents believe that the body uses essential minerals such as calcium and potassium to neutralize the acid and maintain a healthy pH. These minerals stored in bones and organs. Exhausting them diet followers believe open the door for a variety of diseases.

testing pH
Test body's pH before deciding on an alkaline diet can help. Your urine is pH reading reveals whether your body has enough minerals to neutralize the acid products from your diet.

Get pH testing strips at the drugstore or order them online. Test your urine upon awakening in the morning when it should normally read between 6.0 and 6.4. The lower the reading the more acidic urine.

If it is below 6.4 would alkaline diet proponents say that the body was missing minerals to neutralize acid from the food you ate the night before. (See Reference 1) If yes you can take advantage of an alkaline diet.

Making the Switch
Dr. M. Ted Morter Jr. MA author of "Your Health Your Choice said that an alkaline diet will fill what minerals you use to neutralize acid. Aim for meals with 45 percent boiled and 30 percent raw vegetables and fruits. the remaining 25 percent will be grains nuts seeds beans and other legumes and meat.

Do not attempt the switch at once. Dr. Morter prevails. First increase the consumption of cooked vegetables. If you are a stranger to vegetables add one boiled one to a daily meal. The next step is to begin replacing acid-forming proteins such as meat and fish with more cooked vegetables. Then you cook the vegetables less and start including a raw veggie or fruit in your daily menu. Finally begin to limit the intake by other acid forming foods such as sodium caffeine carbonated drinks and sugary processed foods.

Your body will dictate the timetable for completing the switch. Going too fast can lead to headaches digestive problems including diarrhea and nausea and irritability. If that happens eat some protein and reduce the speed of change. You know that your diet is to take effect when morning urine registers around 7.0.

Living with an alkaline diet
This is not a vegetarian diet but you need to eat enough fruits and vegetables each day to counteract acidifying effect of different foods. Use an acid alkaline food chart. Naturopath Christopher Vasey ND author of "The Acid-Alkaline Diet c0tBTXVli5
